Documentary film Festival in Kelowna, B.C. on March 1st to 4th , 2018
An amazing array of over twenty documentary films comes to Kelowna March 1-4. The World Community Film Festival will open Thursday night, March 1st with a special film at the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society. The rest of the films will be shown at Okanagan College Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday.
Friday night’s feature will be the Carlos Santana-produced “Dolores” documenting the life of Dolores Huerta co-founder of the United Farm Workers Union.
Other films address topics such as the housing crisis, environmental protection, farm coops and organic agriculture, indigenous issues and rainbow diversity. Films include local productions and international “docbusters”. Full film descriptions and times can be found at www.worldfilmfestkelowna.net.
An Activist Arena will be part of the festival where people can find local activist groups. Good food is available during the festival as well.
The volunteer committee has maintained a “free admission-education is a right” policy over the film festival’s fifteen-year history. Donations are accepted for local charities.
“The film festival offers an antidote to both ignorance and demoralization-a chance to spend “community time” with your friends and neighbors, while turning attention to the compelling topics of the films” said Mark Haley a festival volunteer.

Note: I have included some images that I hope can be included with the story. They are from “State of Exception” a film shot on the streets of Rio de Janeiro by Canadian independent film maker Jason O’Hara.

FOR OUR EARTH JOIN the MOVEMENT to STOP KINDER MORGAN
SUPPORT COAST PROTECTORS AT APRIL 23 FORUM
Support First Nations’ Coast Protectors efforts to protect our province from tar sands spills along our coast and along the Kinder Morgan pipeline route at an inspirational event, For Our Earth, on Monday April 23rd, 7-9 P.M. in the Nelson United Church sanctuary, 602 Silica Street at Josephine. Join the movement to stop Kinder Morgan from endangering our province’s waterways and lands, and support our transition to renewable energy and a healthier future. This Forum is organized by a coalition of local groups from three regions who are appealing to you and others to add your name to the list. .
Headliners are Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, Joan Phillip of the Penticton Indian Band Council, and Garth Lenz, an internationally award winning environmental photographer who focuses on Canada’s role in the ecosystems of the world.
Grand Chief Phillip asserts, “Now is the time to stand beside Indigenous people in support of our timeless struggle to defend Mother Earth. There is a battle being waged across the globe by Indigenous peoples and their allies demanding a safe, healthy world for future generations. This is about water versus oil and life versus death, ultimately about survival versus extinction.”
The Forum will also feature Indigenous prayer, moving, live entertainment and a Silent Auction.
For Our Earth’s aim is to raise awareness and carry out strategic actions within our regions and along pipeline routes and to raise much needed funds for the First Nations Coast Protectors. The coalition encourages all to share the Coast Protectors donation link with your contacts and on social media so that the campaign continues to grow regionally and globally. Millions of dollars are needed for the First Nations people to continue the struggle in court and in the media.
